LONDON, UK — Rocketman opened earlier this year and some critics are already predicting an Oscar nomination for Taron Egerton's performance as Elton John.
Egerton sings all of the songs in the musical biopic – and it’s not the first time his voice has paid tribute to the musical icon.
He belted out a rendition of I’m Still Standing – as a teenage gorilla – in the 2016 hit SING.
And when he was 17, he sang Your Song in auditions to get into the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
Egerton talked to Evening's Kim Holcomb in London.
HOLCOMB: "Go back in time and say to that Taron, ‘This is going to happen’ – his response would be?...”
EGERTON: “I wouldn't tell him.”
HOLCOMB: “Why?”
EGERTON: “Because of the butterfly effect. So if I told him, I might do things differently and it might not happen. I'd probably start fancying myself a little bit, wouldn't I? ‘You'd better let me in because I'm gonna be singing this in a film about Elton.’”
HOLCOMB: "What do you think is a weirder experience – to be you, singing Elton John in front of Elton John? Or to be Elton John, watching you singing Elton John and playing him?”
EGERTON: “I think it's got to be weirder for him. I think seeing a movie about your life has got to be weird. You know, really weird. For me, performing with him - lots of people have seen Elton play the piano. Not many people have seen him play from the angle I did the other night at Cannes. I took a moment up there to kind of just soak it in. Amazing."
HOLCOMB: "Who plays you in a movie someday?"
EGERTON: "A movie about my life would be really, really, really uninteresting, the budget would be tiny… I think the movies I'm in are about as interesting as I get, sadly."
Rocketman is rated R and is released on DVD and Blu-ray on August 27th, 2019.
