Vintage cars take final ride on Seattle's viaduct

Hundreds of vintage cars roared past Elliott Bay on the Alaskan Way Viaduct one final time on New Year's Day.

It's hard to imagine anyone getting excited about going for a drive in Seattle these days. But for one group of drivers, this New Year’s Day ride on the Alaskan Way Viaduct was not to be missed.

“We’re all coming out to say goodbye to something we all love,” said Deanna Isaacs, who writes for the Auto Reporter.

Hundreds of vintage cars, organized via Facebook, gathered to roar past Elliott Bay one last time.

“That’s the first sight of Seattle that I had,” said Ron Goodfellow, who drove his 1962 Volkswagen Beetle.

The viaduct shuts down January 11, and a favorite scenic drive will disappear when a new 99 tunnel opens.

Corvettes, Camaros, BMWs, VWs, and many more cars lined up at the Mountlake Terrace Transit Center to start the commemorative drive.

“It’s like a car show,” Goodfellow said.

“You have cars from all across the eras and all across makes and models here, and we’re all coming out to just enjoy Seattle,” Isaacs said.

The group drove to SoDo, and then turned around and drove north one last time.

“Just a beautiful sight, I’m going to miss it,” Goodfellow said.
