Tacoma's Stadium Bowl sets the scene for the toughest race in the Northwest

The country's most scenic high school stadium is the site of a grueling race: Unleashed at Stadium Bowl

Tacoma — 814 steps up. 841 steps down. 1,628 stairs in all.

It all adds up to 3/4 of a mile in one of the toughest runs in the Northwest.

On Sunday hundreds of runners took on Unleashed at Stadium Bowl in Tacoma.

Brian Nelson started the race in 2011 as a team building exercise when he was a battalion commander in the National Guard.

“I'm a big fan of what I've always called collective suffering or shared struggle,” said Nelson. “For many of these people, this will be the hardest physical thing they've done to date. And they will see themselves anew when they're done.”

The event raised money for the Kindred Souls Foundation, an animal rescue group Nelson and his wife founded.
