Washington woman's hen may have hatched record number of chicks

A Cheney woman's hen laid 23 eggs, which may break a record.

CHENEY, Wash.-- A Cheney woman may have a record-setting hen.

Lisa Batts' hen, Wynonna, a one-year-old hamburg bantam hen just hatched not one, not two, but over 20 chicks.

"It was like a chick explosion," said Batts.

Batts said Wynonna went missing a few months back. She worried a hawk may have gotten her, but turns out Wynonna had her own plans.

Usually these types of hens will hatch five or six chicks at a time, but Wynonna laid a total of 23 eggs.

"I was happy that she was okay, but we have too many chickens already," said Batts who already has 60 chickens on her property.

Batts submitted an application to the Guinness World Record for most chicks hatched at one time by a hen. She is still waiting for the results, but in the mean time, she said she will eventually have to put some chicks up for adoption.
