MARYSVILLE, Wash. — One person is in custody after a trooper was struck and killed on Interstate 5 near Marysville early Saturday morning.
The Snohomish County Sheriff's Office said the suspect was traveling southbound on I-5 at a high rate of speed near 136th Street North just before 3 a.m. when he allegedly collided with a Washington State Patrol trooper's vehicle on the shoulder.
The sheriff's office said the suspect's vehicle was struck by a van after it came to a rest. The driver of the van was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and the passengers were not injured.
The suspect, a 32-year-old Lynnwood man, was arrested for vehicular homicide investigation, the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office said.
KING 5 does not name suspects until they are officially charged in court.
Officials are still investigating whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the fatal incident. On March 2, a search warrant was obtained to administer a blood test on the suspect to check for possible impairment.
The trooper, identified as 27-year-old Christopher Gadd, had served with the Washington State Patrol for two and a half years and leaves behind a wife and 2-year-old daughter.
"I want [people] to think about the fact that a man, a good man, a father, a good husband, and outstanding son gave his life in service to the people of the great state of Washington,” Chief John Batiste said. "That's what I want them to remember."
The Washington State Department of Transportation said all southbound lanes have reopened after being closed for more than nine hours during the investigation.
