SEATTLE — It's a problematic plant in the Pacific Northwest, but Ciscoe Morris has a suggestion for controlling blackberries – plant one in a container.
“This isn't just any blackberry. It's called Baby Cakes. This specially grown so that you could grow it in a pot. It's a dwarf,” Ciscoe explained, adding that this blackberry is thornless, extremely productive and perfect for container gardens. “So if you live in a condo, you don't have to go to the park to pick those blackberries. You're going to have one grown right out on your patio."
To plant a Baby Cakes blackberry, first cut off all dead twigs. Remove it from its nursery pot, break up the roots, plant it in a container filled with organic potting soil, and water it in. Ciscoe is adding an organic all-purpose liquid fertilizer from Dramm for the initial watering.
"When you use these organic fertilizers you got to shake the living tweedle outta them first!” Ciscoe said, shaking the fertilizer container vigorously. “Okay guy, first I feed you then you feed me. Notice I'm not getting foliage wet. I'm really just getting the soil nice and moist.”
A final note from this gardening expert:
“OK, there's one more thing you have to envision when you plant your Baby Cakes blackberry and that is how good that pie is gonna taste. Even better than a Brussel’s sprout casserole – oh la la!”
