Facing a DUI? How to choose the right lawyer

DUI Heroes focuses exclusively on the defense of DUI and DUI related charges in Washington State. Sponsored by DUI Heroes.

Finding the right attorney for you and your DUI case is an important decision for anyone facing charges. This includes ensuring the attorney’s focus area is DUI law.

“In my opinion, if it’s not 80 percent or more DUI related, move on,” said Jonathan Dichter, founding attorney of DUI Heroes. “If their building has an advertisement for personal injury on it, move on.”

DUI Heroes is one of few law firms solely focused on DUI and DUI-related charges. Dichter gives several tips on what to ask and learn to make sure your lawyer is a good fit.

  • Find out if the attorney is familiar with the court you’ll be in and the judges and prosecutors.
  • Ask if the attorney belongs to local and/or national organizations where they get training about DUI issues.
  • Understand who you’ll primarily be working with throughout your case. Will it be who your consultation is with, the whole firm, or another attorney?
  • Learn more about their communication style, if they write and teach on DUI topics and if they provide resources to help you navigate your situation.

“The more about DUI they know or can teach you or others, the better the fit,” Dichter said.

Various websites offer independent ratings on lawyers, and you can do your own research by looking at reviews and talking to former clients. Most DUI attorneys offer a free initial consultation.

Dichter wrote an informational book called the DUI Survival Guide to help people through the process.

“It’s basically designed for people who have never been through this before to help demystify the process,” Dichter said.

This year’s version contains an additional chapter written by an attorney in Canada. It addresses issues of entry into Canada for those with DUI charges. The book is free to anyone who calls the DUI Heroes office and can be downloaded on the website

“You can really get a great deal because we want to make sure people get the quality help they need from our office,” Dichter said.
