Hawk Zone: Grading the Seahawks at the midway point of the season

Terry Hollimon ranks the performance of the Hawks offense, defense, special teams and coaching staff. Sponsored by Muckleshoot Casino Resort.

SEATTLE — Despite starting off strong, the Seahawks are sitting at 4-5 after the bye week. Terry Hollimon is giving out his grades for the team, some good and some not so good, after seeing them play nine games.

“Sometimes you just have to keep it real as a teacher,” Hollimon said. “If you want your students to get better, you have to tell them the truth.”

Defense:
“I think they’ve held it together most of the season,” Hollimon said. “They kept the Seahawks into games.”

Run game: C
“I would give him (Kenneth Walker) an A as a running back, but because he’s missed several games this season because of injury, and the fact that some of our offensive linemen have been missing and not able to open up holes when he is healthy and in the game, I dropped them down to a C,” Hollimon said.

Passing game: C-
Hollimon says when Geno Smith is on, he’s on, but when he’s not, he throws a lot of reckless interceptions.

Offensive line: F
“These guys have been the Achilles heel of this team all season long.”

Hollimon says injuries have plagued the line, and the team, in general, has not prioritized spending money on linemen.

Special teams:
Hollimon says he would give punter Michael Dickson an A because he’s a gamechanger. He also says field goal kicking and kick returns have been okay.

“They haven’t won games,” he said. “If they were winning games, these guys would get an A.”

Coaching staff: C
Fans were expecting a lot from first-year, defensive-minded coach Mike Macdonald, but the team has had its share of struggles.

“At this point in the season when you’re 4-5, you can’t get better than a C,” Hollimon said.

He says it will be important to get key players healthy again and to focus on the basics and winning in the trenches. The Seahawks will look to get back on track against the 49ers in a divisional battle on Sunday.
