Hawk Zone: Lions hand Seahawks their first loss of the season

Despite falling short, Geno Smith, Kenneth Walker III and the offense had strong performances, especially in the second half. Sponsored by Muckleshoot Casino Resort.

SEATTLE — The Seahawks put up a good fight against the Detroit Lions but fell short in a 42-29 Monday night loss in Detroit.

“The Seahawks got off to a slow start,” Terry Hollimon said. “Second half, they really built it back up, played together as a team, as a unit. They put some good things together offensively and made it a good game.”

Lions quarterback Jared Goff completed 18 of 18 passes for a perfect night against a Seahawks defense missing some key players.

“You take into consideration that this team was missing five of its best players defensively, and that leads to a great offensive game from Jared Goff,” Hollimon said.

The Seahawks offense played very well in the second half, but they couldn’t catch the Lions. Geno Smith had a career day with 395 yards passing and 38 yards rushing. Kenneth Walker III, who had been out with an injury, came back strong against the Lions with 80 yards rushing and three touchdowns. He is Hollimon’s player of the game.

“Second half, he broke free,” he said. “He proved why he’s one of the most dynamic young running backs in the game.”

Hollimon and many fans agree there were some questionable calls from the refs during the game, especially when defensive players were going up against DK Metcalf.

“Then again, you’re on the road,” he said. “You’re in Detroit. You’ve got to expect some of those things. You’ve just got to play the game.”

The Seahawks will look to bounce back against the struggling New York Giants on Sunday at Lumen Field. Hollimon hopes this will be an opportunity for key injured players to come back healthy.

“This is a game the Seahawks should win,” he said. “The fans should be out there in full force making noise, out there in Lumen Field.”
