Hawk Zone: Seahawks overcome rocky start to get the win against the Broncos

The Seahawks are now 1-0 in the Mike Macdonald era, beating the Denver Broncos in front of a home crowd. Sponsored by Muckleshoot Casino Resort.

SEATTLE — The Seahawks made key adjustments in the second half and went on to beat the Broncos 26-20 on Sunday in Seattle.

The defense had two interceptions and held the Broncos to under 250 total yards. New head coach Mike Macdonald is a former defensive coordinator and has helped improve the defensive play so far this season.

“The defense really showed up and showed out,” Terry Hollimon said. “You look at the guys that really played well in this game, it was the defensive guys.”

The Seahawks offense got off to a slow start. Quarterback Geno Smith was sacked on the first play of the game and threw an interception on the second play. With the help of Kenneth Walker III, the offense came alive in the second half.

“As the game went on, the game progressed, these guys found their groove,” Hollimon said. “They got into what they wanted to do.”

New offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb is known for making adjustments during the game, and he was able to put more emphasis on the run game and Kenneth Walker III. Walker III ended the day with 103 yards rushing and a touchdown and is Hollimon’s player of the game.

“Every time he touches the ball, it feels like something electric can happen,” he said.

The offensive line is already dealing with injuries this season, especially at right tackle. Abraham Lucas was placed on the PUP list and won’t be available for at least three more games. George Fant, who started in place of Lucas, was injured during the game, leaving questions for the future.

“It’s going to be a little bit of hodge podge on that front line,” Hollimon said. “Hopefully they’ll be able to pull things together.”

The Seahawks will travel to Foxborough to take on the Patriots this coming Sunday. The Pats are fresh off an unexpected win against the Cincinnati Bengals. Running back Rhamondre Stevenson picked up 120 yards rushing in that game.

“The Seahawks better be ready to defend against the run,” Hollimon said.
