How to recognize the signs of stroke quickly

If you experience stroke symptoms, it’s vital to get immediate medical treatment to ensure the best outcome. Sponsored by Virginia Mason Franciscan Health.

SEATTLE — May is American Stroke Month, and it’s important to know the signs of stroke. Early medical intervention can save lives.

“There’s only a limited amount of time we have to actually treat somebody once they’ve started experiencing stroke symptoms,” said Josh Snavely, stroke program chair for Virginia Mason Franciscan Health. “Time is brain.”

The sooner a patient can get treated, the better the chance providers have of reducing effects of the stroke or even potentially reversing symptoms.

“BE FAST is a really easy acronym we use for teaching people in the community what the signs and symptoms of stroke are,” said Anna Moore, registered nurse and stroke program manager for Virginia Mason Franciscan Health.

BE FAST stands for balance, eyes (blurred vision), facial droop, arm weakness, slurred speech and time to call 911. If you experience these symptoms, it’s important to call 911 and get prompt medical care.

“Don’t hesitate,” Snavely said. “If there’s any concern, any one of those items, it doesn’t have to be multiple. Any one of those is a sign of stroke.”

All EMTs and paramedics in Western Washington are trained to identify the signs of stroke and measure the severity. If a stroke appears to be severe, they can transport you to a comprehensive stroke center for treatment.

Common risk factors of stroke include high blood pressure, smoking and diabetes. Lifestyle changes can help reduce the risk of stroke, including eating plenty of fruits and vegetables and staying physically active.

“Most of us know what we should be doing,” Snavely said. “It’s a matter of making it part of our routine.”

Stroke support groups, inpatient rehab facilities and other resources can help stroke patients after diagnosis. Learn more about the resources available for patients on the Virginia Mason Franciscan Health website.
