Learning to ice skate at the Kraken Community Iceplex - Local Lens Seattle

Kelly Hanson gets a behind the scenes look at the Seattle Kraken's new Northgate practice facility. Sponsored by Premera.

WE DID IT! We finally have our very own NHL team! Welcome Seattle Kraken! So get excited for the first part of a brand new series I’m calling ‘Ahead of the Game’, all thanks to Premera Blue Cross, the official health plan of the Seattle Kraken.

I am so pumped to celebrate and cheer on this new team during their inaugural season — but if I am being honest, I also have not a clue about hockey, the rules etc.

So, to teach me the ropes or rather pass me the skates, I met up with Chad from the Kraken Community Iceplex in Seattle’s Northgate! I got a behind the scenes look of the Kraken’s gorgeous new practice facility and public skate arena. PLUS, I got to hear about all the incredible community programs they offer. The one I will be highlighting is the Learn to Skate class. Ages 3+ can get out there on the ice. I went ahead and popped into one of the classes. It’s for anyone wanting to become a hockey player, figure skater or just a newbie to the skate scene (the latter is me.. just trying not to come out with an injury).

Sessions follow the Learn to Skate USA curriculum and run 7-weeks each. Skaters will be introduced to skills such as forward and backward skating, stops, edges, crossovers and turns with agility, balance, coordination and speed.

This video truly got me so excited for Seattle’s first hockey season and all things hockey! I even purchased some swag.

If you want to check out their community programs on the Kraken Community Iceplex's website.

If you visit the Iceplex you will definitely want to check out the Kraken Team Store, possibly sit and watch the players practice, and visit their new restaurant and bar that will be opening in a couple of weeks. 32 Bar & Grill — the local hockey bar. Sign me up!

Find more info on public skate sessions ($15 per person) online.
