Minimally invasive gynecologic surgeons aim to improve patients’ quality of life

The team at EvergreenHealth Women’s Specialty Care, Gynecology treats complex conditions, like endometriosis and fibroids. Sponsored by EvergreenHealth.

SEATTLE — OB-GYNs provide care to women of all ages and manage a wide range of medical conditions. Sometimes complex gynecologic issues require advanced surgical care, though, and it’s important to know where to go.

EvergreenHealth Women’s Specialty Care, Gynecology is a subspecialty practice that provides minimally invasive surgical treatments for a variety of conditions.

“I really focus on the specialty conditions that are quite complex and often require surgical intervention, so things like endometriosis, adenomyosis which can cause pain with periods, pain with a lot of daily activity, fibroids, which can cause very heavy bleeding and uterine prolapse,” said Dr. Rohan Hattiangadi, board-certified OB-GYN and minimally invasive gynecologic surgeon.

The subspecialty practice doesn’t provide routine OB-GYN care or participate in obstetrical care. The team instead focuses on treatments like laparoscopic excision of endometriosis, ovarian cystectomy (cyst removal), myomectomy (fibroid removal) and hysterectomy.

“Oftentimes by the time they’ve been referred to me, they’ve seen a primary care doctor or a gynecologist or general OB-GYN in the community who has done ultrasounds and found these problems that require surgical management,” Dr. Hattiangadi said.

Minimally invasive surgery can minimize a patient’s hospital stay, duration of pain medication and bleeding risk. It allows for small incisions, less pain and a faster recovery.

“My goal is to find the problem that is impacting your quality of life and improve it such that we can get you back to your normal day to day function,” Dr. Hattiangadi said.

While many women are getting information on their symptoms and conditions through online forums and social media these days, it’s important to take that information and act on it.

“Once we hear about these things, then it’s really up to us to go to the doctor and seek out this care,” Dr. Hattiangadi said.

If you or someone you know is experiencing gynecologic issues that may require minimally invasive surgery, you can talk with your primary care doctor or OB-GYN about requesting a referral, or call EvergreenHealth to schedule a consultation.
