KAPOLEI, Hawaii — Snorkeling is a popular activity when visiting Hawaii, but can be subject to weather, unpredictable currents, and low visibility. At Rainbow Reef at Aulani, a Disney Resort and Spa, you can swim in the only private snorkeling lagoon on Oahu in a more foreseeable environment.
Measuring 3800 square feet, the lagoon is home to nearly 1000 fish. It's conveniently located in the middle of Waikolohe Valley.
"It's made to resemble a natural reef here in Hawaii and showcases colorful marine animals found in our waters." said Raffy Jacinto, animal and water sciences operations manager. Jacinto himself goes at least once a week into the waters of Rainbow Reef.
To begin your experience, you check in at Rainbow Reef Rentals. No reservations are required. You are given an inflatable horse collar vest, mask, and snorkel.
Once you get in the water, you get a unique opportunity to get up close and personal experience with the wildlife.
"Because the fish are somewhat used to having people around them, you swim out calmly to the middle of the area and you'll see a lot of the butterfly fish actually swim right up to your face." Jacinto said.
Hidden treasures can be found underwater, like statues of Menehune, the mythological small craftspeople who are said to inhabit the islands centuries ago. But it's not just about fun. It's educational because you will learn about the local marine life.
Rainbow Reef is located at 92 Aliinui Dr, Kapolei, HI 96707 and snorkeling is open 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. daily.
