After five long weeks with no one willing to play them, on Saturday afternoon Archbishop Murphy High School will finally return to the football field.
The Wildcats are set to play Olympic High School at one p.m. Saturday. The long-awaited game will be played at Archbishop Murphy's stadium in Everett.
It will be Archbishop Murphy's first game since September 16.
The private Catholic school made national headlines after five teams opted to forfeit, over concerns about player safety against an Archbishop team that outscored opponents in its first three games of the season, 170-0.
"The last few weeks have been a roller coaster ride of emotion, from disappointment to anger to now we're actually looking forward to playing this next game," said AMHS Head Coach Jerry Jensen.
Olympic High School's athletic director told KING 5 they are committed to playing the game and never even considered forfeiting.
Jensen thanked the Olympic team for not backing out.
Since Archbishop Murphy is a private school, it can draw athletes from a much larger geographic area than the public schools it often plays. Some have said that's the reason behind a competitive imbalance in the Cascade Conference that Archbishop Murphy is a member of.
The president of the Cascade Conference has said it's too late to make changes this year, but they will be looking for ways to level the playing field next season.
