SEATTLE - In a move Mariners' fans have long awaited, the team designated reliever Fernando Rodney for assignment following the 10-inning loss to the White Sox Saturday night.
Seattle also optioned reliever Danny Farquhar to Tacoma. Farquhar (0-4) walked in the eventual game-winning run in the 10th.
After an All-Star season in 2014 when he recorded 48 saves for Seattle, Rodney (5-5) made each game an adventure. He recorded 16 saves, but eventually lost his closer role.
Rodney officially blew six saves, and had a 5.68 ERA, his highest since his second big league season in 2003 when his ERA was 6.07.
Pitchers Roenis Elias and Logan Kensing have been called up, and will be in uniform for the Mariners on Sunday.
