SEATTLE — Major League Baseball announced that Seattle Mariners closer Andrés Muñoz is going to the 2024 All-Star Game as replacement player. This is Muñoz's first All-Star selection.
Muñoz has 15 saves, six holds and a 1.45 ERA in 37 appearances this season.
He is one of three AL closers with a sub-2.00 ERA and 10+ saves this season. Muñoz also leads the league with six saves on four or more outs in a game.
The 25-year-old reliever replaces M's starter Logan Gilbert on the squad.
On Sunday, Gilbert was named to his first All-Star Game. The right-hander is starting this Sunday against the Angels two days before the Midsummer Classic. With that short turnaround, from Sunday's game to Tuesday's game, it made it unlikely Gilbert would pitch.
The 2024 All-Star Game is 5 p.m. Tuesday in Arlington, Texas.
