Here's why downtown Seattle buildings are lit up purple and gold

Downtown Seattle will be illuminated in a sea of purple and gold Sunday and Monday as people show their support for the Huskies.

Landmarks across the city of Seattle will be lit up purple and gold next week to celebrate the University of Washington Huskies’ national championship run.

UW is taking on the Michigan Wolverines in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game on Monday at NRG Stadium in Houston.

Seattle buildings that will be lit up on Sunday and Monday include the Space Needle, Great Wheel, T-Mobile Park, Lumen Field, the Columbia Tower, Sheraton Grand Seattle, Amazon Spheres, Rainier Square and 1201 Third Ave., a 55-story skyscraper near the waterfront.

Home Plate Center, KING 5 's building, will also don purple and gold.

Washington State Ferries will also be lit up to let Purple Reign, along with the Federal Way Performing Arts Center.

T-Mobile Park said lights at the baseball stadium would be displayed nightly starting at sundown Thursday through Monday.

In Olympia, the state capitol building will fly the Husky flag on Monday to support the Dawgs. The flag will be raised at 9 a.m. Supporters can watch the flag raising from the capitol steps.

This isn't the first time downtown Seattle buildings have been illuminated to support a cause. Landmarks have previously lit up different colors to support other sports teams or mark occasions. Last year, Seattle lit up buildings orange to pay tribute on Gun Violence Awareness Day. The Columbia Tower has also lit up blue earlier this year to mark World Diabetes Day and Rave Green to celebrate the Seattle Sounders' playoff run.

The title game could be historic for UW, which is eyeing its first national championship in the College Football Playoff era. The Huskies last won the national championship in 1991 after beating Michigan in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. That year UW shared the title with Miami, which was also undefeated that season.
