Hundreds of fans send off Huskies ahead of National Championship Game

The college football national championship game kicks off Monday and there's a lot of excitement in Seattle. Crowds lined up to cheer on the team.

SEATTLE — Hundreds of Husky fans came to wish the University of Washington's football team off to the College Football Playoff National Championship.

Not even the rain could keep them away, even though it did illicit some barks from Dubs, the beloved Husky.

Many showed up more than an hour ahead of the send-off. "I skipped school to be here," said Abby Smallidge, who came with her father.

"It's something I've always wanted to be able to be a part of history, like getting to witness and telling my future kids about it," said fan Domlao.

"This team is probably the best team the Huskies has ever had," said Bill Marshall, a former UW football player. He played in the 1982 Rose Bowl and won the PAC-10 while on the team.

He said he's proud to see what this team has accomplished.

"I think it's a huge accomplishment and a credit to all the players and the coaching staff and everybody that has come before them."

The top players just as confident as the sea of purple and gold that cheered them on.

Rome Odunze hyped up the crowd as he made his way to the bus. KING 5 asked how he was feeling as he boarded, "Amazing, go Dawgs!"

Star Quarterback Michael Penix Jr. said he feels good about Monday's game against Michigan, "It's going to be a great football game, we're really excited for the challenge."

Penix showed his appreciation for Husky Nation, "They are all out here cheering. It's raining, and they don't care; they're die-hard. They love us and we love them as well."

As the bus pulled away from the stadium, hoping to pull off a big win, there's no doubt for fans that the Dawgs will earn this W.

"We're going to win, we're going to beat Michigan just like we did with the national championship!" said Marshall.

Penix said the team has worked hard to get to this spot but still has more work to be done.
