Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck announced he will retire from professional football. His next step: becoming an ESPN analyst for Sunday NFL Countdown and Monday Night Countdown.

Hasselbeck tweeted, saying "it has been a pleasure and an honor."

Hasselbeck played for 18 seasons in the NFL. His longest stint was with the Seattle Seahawks from 2001 to 2010. Most recently, he played for the Indianapolis Colts.

During his time in Seattle, Hasselbeck led the team to six playoff appearances, including Super Bowl XL in 2005. His best numbers came in 2007, when he set career highs for passing yards (3,966) and touchdowns (28).

This past season in Indianapolis, he stepped in for an injured Andrew Luck and posted a 5-3 record, including four straight wins. He became the third quarterback over 40 to win four straight games, joining Warren Moon and Brett Favre.

Reporter Adam Schefter commented on Twitter that ESPN now has "a surplus of Hasselbecks." The announcement came via ESPN early Tuesday, but had been rumored for a couple days.
