Report: Russell Wilson already has a suitor in the AFC

Since the Broncos will be paying Russell Wilson $39 million to play for another team, there will be interested suitors for the 35-year-old quarterback.

PITTSBURGH — Three days after being notified of his release from the Denver Broncos, quarterback Russell Wilson appears to already have an interested suitor.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are interested in signing Wilson and are planning to meet with him, according to sources of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The report says Wilson has an interest in joining the Steelers.

"Steelers are interested in signing Russell Wilson and are tentatively planning to meet with the former Broncos QB before start of free agency, per sources," said Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporter Gerry Dulac.

Wilson is visiting Friday with the Steelers and spoke with the New York Giants on Thursday, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. Schefter said Wilson's session with the Giants was "an exploratory meeting."

Wilson is expected to meet with other teams, including possibly the Las Vegas Raiders, according to Schefter.

Wilson, 35, will be released when the new NFL season officially opens next Wednesday.

The Broncos will pay Wilson $39 million in 2024 to play for another team.

Overall, the Broncos will have paid Wilson $124 million for 11 wins.

One Broncos legend, former linebacker Karl Mecklenburg, made his feelings known about Wilson on Tuesday on social media.

"Russell Wilson isn’t a leader," Mecklenburg wrote on X. "The foolishness that went on in his first year at Denver with a private coach, his own office at the facility, and family at training camp when other players didn’t have those privileges, proved his self centeredness."

The Broncos acquiesced to Wilson's request for his own office, as well as personal coaching and training staff at team headquarters during his first season in Denver in 2022.

Mecklenburg is considered one of the greatest Broncos of all time, playing his entire career in orange and blue from 1983 to 1994, with six Pro Bowl appearances. Mecklenburg is a member of the Broncos Ring of Fame at Empower Field at Mile High.
