After an eventful first day of the NFL Draft, the Seattle Seahawks still had one gigantic question remaining: What was going to happen to Earl Thomas?
A report from Sports Illustrated writer Michael Silver indicates at least two teams have made a trade offer for Thomas. However, the trade did not happen by Friday night.
Of course, as Silver points out, the Seahawks are certainly not committed to dealing Thomas. They are planning to have him on the roster, and don’t need to trade him for cap reasons. In fact, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport calls a Thomas trade a “long-shot.”
Thomas has been connected to trade rumors all offseason, with the Cowboys showing up most frequently. Thomas added fuel to the fire last season when he flagged down Cowboys’ coach Jason Garrett after the two teams played, telling him “come get me.”
The Texas native grew up a Cowboys fan. The Cowboys released star wide receiver Dez Bryant earlier this offseason, ramping up speculation they were clearing cap space to acquire Thomas.
Seattle had originally asked for a first and a third-round pick in exchange for Thomas. With the first round being complete, any Thomas trade would likely net the team a handful of picks, including a second rounder.
The Cowboys have one pick in both the second and third rounds on Friday. They also have two fourth-round picks, a fifth-round pick, three six-round selections and one pick in round seven.
