SEATTLE — It was a decidedly baseball vibe in Seattle on Saturday, but some fans were thinking football.
"I think even though we have a lot of the same roster, I think the Seahawks will surprise some people this year," said fan Kyle Branigan, as he walked into T-Mobile Park to watch the Mariners play the New York Mets.
With the Olympics in full effect and the Mariners eyeing a playoff run, there is stiff competition for fans' attention.
When asked if she is more interested in the Mariners or the Seahawks right now, Michelle Lane responded, "That's a tough question. We're big fans of both, and right now we want to see the Mariners go to the playoffs."
"It seems like every day they're in first place, or they're tied, or a half game behind. I'm in," said Michelle's husband Doug, sipping a beer and watching the Seahawks at a local sports bar. "But the Seahawks are undefeated right now!"
The Seahawks are hoping to improve on last year's 9-8 record.
The season ended with a wildcard playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers.
It will be a different look on the gridiron this season.
The biggest change is new Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald. He's the NFL's youngest head coach, replacing the beloved Pete Carroll after 14 seasons on the sideline.
Macdonald is defense-minded while his new offensive coordinator comes from the UW Huskies, fresh off their trip to the NCAA national title game last season.
The changes are leaving fans with a lot of questions, along with plenty of anticipation.
"We have no idea what they're gonna look like with a new coach and everything else," said fan Jeff Carlson.
"At first I was disappointed with Coach Pete leaving, but now it's a new world and it's gonna be fun to watch. We've still got a good nucleus. I'm looking forward to it," added his friend Gus Fitzpatrick.
While most eyes are on the Mariners right now, the Seahawks will have the spotlight soon enough.
"Everybody come out and support the team," said Kyle Branigan, taking a bite of his hot dog. "It's gonna be a great season."
