SEATTLE — Longtime punter Jon Ryan signed a one-day contract with the Seattle Seahawks on Tuesday afternoon, allowing him to retire with the team.
Ryan spent 10 of his 12 seasons in the National Football League (NFL) with the Seahawks, who signed the punter in 2008 after he was waived by the Green Bay Packers.
From there, Ryan was a constant on the Pete Carroll Seahawks teams that defined the last decade.
Ryan, who punted for 40,883 yards over his career, had a notable moment etched in Seahawks history when he threw a touchdown pass against his former team in the 2014 NFC Championship game. Trailing 16-0 to the Packers at the time, the Seahawks dialed up the fake field goal, entrusting Ryan with a big opportunity in the third quarter.
Ryan rolled to his left before tossing a touchdown to Garry Gilliam. The unlikely touchdown ended up being the catalyst behind the Seahawks' 28-22 comeback victory in overtime. Ryan completed four of five passes for 73 yards in his career, but that remains his only touchdown.
During his tenure, the Seahawks won a Super Bowl in 2013 and nearly won another in 2014.
