SEATTLE — Pete Carroll is out as Seahawks head coach and is expected to move to an advisor role with the organization, according to a release on Wednesday morning.
A statement from Seahawks Chair Jody Allen on Wednesday said the two sides agreed to amicably move on after "thoughtful meetings and careful consideration."
"His expertise in leadership and building a championship culture will continue as an integral part of our organization moving forward," Allen said in a statement. "Pete will always be a beloved member of the Seahawks family."
Carroll leaves the franchise as the winningest coach in Seahawks history. In his tenure, Carroll won a Super Bowl in 2013 against the Denver Broncos, made another Super Bowl in 2014 and won 137 regular season games.
The Seahawks made the playoffs in 10 seasons under Carroll, but have missed the postseason in two of the last three years. In 2023, the Seahawks finished 9-8 but missed out on the playoffs to the Green Bay Packers.
"It’s been an honor and a thrill to be a part of this program and I’ve loved every minute of it," Carroll said at a press conference on Wednesday afternoon. "And you’ve watched me love it, in particular."
Carroll, 72, was the oldest coach in the National Football League (NFL) last season. His 14-year stint as Seahawks head coach was the fourth-longest in the NFL, behind Bill Belichick, Mike Tomlin and John Harbaugh.
“I’m so grateful to the coaches who have been with us for so many years and also all of the coaches that have been here for the years before, that have put up with my stuff and found a way to bring it to life daily," Carroll said. "I have great gratitude for that. It’s not just the dedication and the loyalty but it’s the freaking juice. I appreciate that a lot.”
Carroll said Wednesday he fought to remain the head coach of the Seahawks but accepted that the franchise wanted to move in a different direction.
While Carroll said he is unsure what his role with the organization will be, he is optimistic about his future.
"I'm frickin' jacked," Carroll said. "I'm fired up. I'm not tired. I'm not worn down, you guys tried your best you didn't wear me out."
ESPN's Adam Schefter said in a social media post the Seahawks are expected to be interested in Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, who was an assistant coach in Seattle from 2009-2010 and the team's defensive coordinator for the 2013-14 season.
