SEATTLE — The potential next head coach of the Seahawks reportedly will be in Seattle on Wednesday for a second interview.
Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald will be in town for his second interview, NFL Media's Tom Pelissero reported citing league sources. Macdonald met with the Seahawks' brass on Tuesday in Baltimore, Pelissero added.
With Tuesday's report that Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson took his name out of contention for the opening, Macdonald seems to be the organization's primary target.
Macdonald led a Ravens defense that was top-5 in scoring over each of the last two seasons, and is coming off a second-half shutout of Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game, albeit in a losing effort.
At 36 years old, Macdonald would be half the age of his predecessor in Pete Carroll. With an entirely defensive coaching background, Macdonald would need to find an offensive mind to lead the Seahawks offense were he to get the job.
Dan Quinn is another candidate the Seahawks have interviewed multiple times, and has his own strong background as a defensive coach, including helping the Seahawks win a Super Bowl as a defensive coordinator.
More of an elder statesman in the NFL coaching ranks, Quinn would bring experience as an NFL head coach to the Seahawks.
Bringing Macdonald in for a second interview just a day after his first indicates at least a healthy mutual interest. Depending on how Wednesday's conversations go, the Seahawks conceivably could have a new head coach by the end of the week, if not sooner.
