Richard Sherman responds to latest 'you aren't the best' critic

Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie said last week that Darrelle Revis, not Sherman, should hold the title.
May 26, 2015; Renton, WA, USA; Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman (25) warms up before OTA practice at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center.

SEATTLE – Richard Sherman responded Tuesday to his latest critic.

Did we expect any less?

The Seahawks cornerback was the target of a verbal volley by New York Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie. Cromartie claimed Sherman is not the best cornerback in the NFL because he only plays one side of the field, does not follow the No. 1 receiver, and has the support of two of the best safeties in the league.

Cromartie said his teammate, Darrelle Revis, is the best at the position.

Sherman turned the tables after Tuesday's OTAs.

"How many great left tackles do you see switching to the right side because a great D-end switches to the right side?" Sherman said, according to 710 ESPN Seattle.

Sherman also called the comments "unfortunate" and pointed out that Cromartie would not have made the Pro Bowl last season if the Seahawks had gone to the Super Bowl. Cromartie was selected to replace Sherman on the Pro Bowl roster.

What some people may not remember is that Cromartie called Sherman the best cornerback less than 18 months ago in an interview with ProFootballTalk. What's changed? One thing is that Cromartie and Revis weren't teammates last year.

Sherman also said he was happy to avoid Tommy John surgery on his injured left elbow that could have sidelined him for up to nine months. But he said he may need surgery in the future if problems arise.

Other team notes

  • Sherman said defensive end Michael Bennett has been at Seahawks headquarters but has not been practicing. Bennett, who is entering the second year of a four-year contract, has said he wants a new deal but has also said he does not want to be traded.
  • Wide receiver Paul Richardson was seen fielding kickoffs. He underwent surgery for a torn ACL five months ago. Running back Christine Michael was also back and taking most of the first-team reps.
  • Quarterback Tavaris Jackson has reportedly re-signed to remain Russell Wilson's backup.
