SEATTLE — It appears the Seahawks and longtime former quarterback Russell Wilson are on better terms.
Wilson shared a video on social media Tuesday of a Seahawks throwback jersey with his name and number, saying he was "super super grateful" the team sent him the jersey.
It has been nearly 2.5 years since Wilson's controversial trade to the Denver Broncos. Wilson was awarded with a massive new contract in Denver and then unceremoniously released after just two seasons as a Bronco. Wilson signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason and is expected to be the team's starting quarterback in 2024.
The Seahawks, meanwhile, made one playoff appearance with Geno Smith under center and ended up parting ways with longtime head coach Pete Carroll at the conclusion of the 2023 season. There were reports in the wake of the trade that it stemmed from a fractured relationship between Wilson and Carroll, but both men publicly denied any animosity between the two. Wilson even flew up to Seattle on the day of Carroll's ouster to join a large group of former and current players to celebrate their coach.
Seattle now has a new head coach in Mike Macdonald, and perhaps the organization wants to mend fences with Wilson. The Super Bowl-winning team that Wilson was the quarterback of was celebrated during the 2023 season, but it seems likely that Wilson's number one day will be enshrined in the team's Ring of Honor.
Wilson sounds appreciative of the gesture, and should be remembered fondly in Seattle for all of his on-field and off-field contributions during his tenure.
