Seahawks' Uchenna Nwosu to miss 2-6 weeks with sprained MCL, reports say

Nwosu was injured on a cut block by Browns offensive lineman Wyatt Teller in the Seahawks' 37-33 preseason victory.

SEATTLE — The Seattle Seahawks will be without one of its top edge rushers for an extended time.

Uchenna Nwosu suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament (MCL) in the Seahawks' final preseason game Saturday, which will sideline him for two to six weeks, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Nwosu injured his MCL on a cut block by Cleveland Browns offensive lineman Wyatt Teller in the Seahawks' 37-33 preseason victory on Saturday evening. The MCL keeps the knee from bending inward and stabilizes it against rotational forces.

In two seasons with the Seahawks Nwosu totaled 11.5 sacks and 82 tackles. The 27-year-old outside linebacker had become one of the reliable components of the Seahawks defense after his time with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Days after Nwosu was injured, the Seahawks traded for Jaguars outside linebacker Trevis Gipson on Monday morning to bolster its linebacker core. Gipson, a fifth-round pick in the 2020 National Football League (NFL) Draft, has tallied 11 sacks and 81 tackles in four seasons for the Chicago Bears and Tennessee Titans. He forced five fumbles in his 2021 campaign with Chicago.

The Seahawks open its 2024 regular season on Sept. 8 at Lumen Field against the Denver Broncos.
