SEATTLE — Though he was not in goal for the team's season opener on Tuesday, Joey Daccord clearly has impressed the Seattle Kraken's front office.
The organization announced that Daccord has agreed to a five-year contract extension that will keep him in Seattle through the 2029-30 season. The extension is worth $25 million over five years, the team said.
Daccord, 28, finished the 2023-24 season with a .916 save percentage and allowed 2.46 goals per game on average. His most notable game in goal came during the 2024 Winter Classic, when Daccord held the Vegas Golden Knights scoreless in a 3-0 win at T-Mobile Park in Seattle.
The former Arizona State Sun Devil has played in just 69 career games in the National Hockey League (NHL) but evidently has earned the trust of Kraken General Manager Ron Francis.
“Joey stepped up last season and proved his ability to handle an increased workload,” said Francis in a release. “We’re confident he can take his game to another level, and we’re excited to have him under contract long term.”
Philip Grubauer got the start in goal for Tuesday's season opener against the St. Louis Blues and looked strong until a quick three-goal barrage in just a few minutes of game action led to a 3-2 defeat for Seattle.
Head coach Dan Bylsma has indicated the team plans to rotate Grubauer and Daccord throughout the season.
The Kraken next will take the ice on Saturday against the Minnesota Wild, a game that will be televised locally on KONG. Puck drop is scheduled for 5 p.m. PT.
