Olympic swimmer Nathan Adrian announced Thursday he is being treated for testicular cancer.
The Bremerton native said doctors caught the cancer early, and the “prognosis is good.”
“I am keeping a positive attitude as cases such as mine are curable,” Adrian wrote in a Tweet. “I am extremely grateful for my family and friends, especially my wife, for their love and support.”
A three-time Olympian, Adrian has won five gold medals, including two in the 4x100 meter freestyle and one each in the 100 meter freestyle, 4x100 meter IM relay, and 4x100 meter medley.
Adrian said he is scheduled for surgery next week, and then plans to return to the pool a few weeks later to train for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
He also hopes to use his diagnosis to break the stigma around discussing men’s health issues.
“I’ve realized that too often we tend to avoid those important topics, ignore potential warning signs, and put off getting the medical help we need,” Adrian wrote.
