Medal count among local athletes

Gold: 5

Washington swimmer Matt King earned a gold medal with Team USA in the men's 4x100m relay on Saturday, July 27. Though King did not swim in the final race, he swam in the qualifying heat and will still be awarded an Olympic medal.

Vancouver gymnast Jordan Chiles and Team USA won the gold medal in the team competition on Tuesday, July 30.

Former UW captain and 2020 Olympic bronze medalist Jacob Dawson helped Great Britain win its men's eight gold medal on Saturday, Aug. 3.

Current Storm star Jewell Loyd and former UW basketball star Kelsey Plum helped bring the U.S. an eighth consecutive gold medal in women's basketball.

Silver: 6

A New Zealand group that included former UW rower Logan Ullrich finished in second by less than a second in the men's four A final to the United States. Ullrich, who is from Auckland, wrapped up his UW career in 2023.

Gert-Jan Van Doorn, a 2021 UW alum, was part of The Netherlands' second-place finish in the men's eight final. Dawson, Van Doorn and the four Americans gave the school six total medalists from just the men's eight final.

Audrey Kwon and Keana Hunter helped the U.S. win its first team artistic swimming medal in 20 years on Wednesday. Team USA finished second behind China.

Kenneth Rooks of Walla Walla won a surprise silver medal in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase final on Wednesday.

Canoe sprinter Nevin Harrison came just short of defending her Tokyo Olympics gold medal, finishing second in the A final of the 200m C1 race.

Bronze: 13

Former UW rower Tabea Schendekehl and Team Germany finished third in the women's quadruple sculls A final early Wednesday morning. Schendekehl, originally from Dortmund, Germany, finished her career at UW in 2021.

Just a day later, another former Husky rower earned a bronze as Phoebe Spoors and New Zealand finished third in the women's four A final. Spoors, originally from Christchurch, New Zealand, graduated from UW in 2017.

Nearly a century after the "Boys in the Boat" won a gold medal for the U.S. in Berlin, another American team full of former University of Washington Huskies won a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. On Saturday, the team placed third with a time of 5:25.28, placing them on the podium for bronze. The U.S. men's eight boat is coached by UW rowing coach Michael Callahan and features four UW alumni: Chris Carlson, Rielly Milne, Evan Olson and Pieter Quinton.

Holly Dunford, a UW graduate in 2022, won a bronze for a third-place finish in the women's eight final for Great Britain.

Chiles closed out the Paris Olympics gymnastics competition with a third-place finish in the floor exercise final, finishing behind fellow American Simone Biles and Brazil's Rebecca Andrade. After an appeal, the International Olympic Committee has said Chiles' medal instead should be awarded to a Romanian gymnast, Ana Barbosu. The U.S. Olympic Committee has appealed that ruling.

Cashmere's Hailey Van Lith and Team USA finished third in the women's 3x3 basketball competition after getting off to a rough start.

Former UW captain Simon van Dorp, a 2020 UW alum, finished third in the men's single sculls final for The Netherlands.

Two current Seattle Storm players, Sami Whitcomb and Ezi Magbegor, as well as former Storm star Lauren Jackson helped Australia win a bronze medal in the women's basketball competition.
