Road to Rio: Ryan Murphy

Ryan Murphy is headed to his second Olympic swimming trials. He narrowly missed making the 2012 team, finishing 4th in the 200m backstroke while he was still a high school student. Now an accomplished NCAA and World Champion, Murphy is expected to contend for several medals in Rio.

BIRTHDAY: July 2, 1995

HOMETOWN: Jacksonville, Fla.

COLLEGE: University of California-Berkley

OLYMPIC TRIALS HISTORY: Just missed qualifying for the 2012 Olympics, finishing 4th in the 200m backstroke at the trials and 6th in the 100m backstroke.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS: Won the 400m medley relay at the 2015 FINA World Championships, six-time NCAA Champion including the 100 and 200 backstroke in 2015 and 2016.

OTHER NOTES: Ryan played lots of sports growing up including soccer and baseball, but his mother would not let him play tackle football because his father got injured playing football. As a 13-year-old, he swam against Ryan Lochte in a senior meet.
