Shoreline native Katrina Young may not have qualified for the final in the women’s 10m platform diving, but you wouldn’t have known it from her optimism after leaving the pool.

“I feel honored to be competing against the best divers in the world and be amongst them,” Young said. “It’s a learning process.”

After earning 8.0’s across the board on her opening dive, the Shorecrest alum botched her second dive, nearly landing on her back. Despite nailing her next three dives, the second dive kept her from qualifying for the final.

Young finished 13th, 5.0 points behind the 12th place finisher, Mexico’s Paola Espinosa. Young earned scores of 72.00, 21.45, 64.00, 72.00, and 72.00 in her Olympic debut.

People can expect Young to be back at the Olympics in four years, and may even see the same back 3 ½ somersault that did her in.

“Now I have so much fire,” Young said. “I want to go for another and I want to make that dive my most solid one, and learn from this experience and come back.”
