  • The U.S. men’s and women’s 4x100 meter teams will compete in the final. However, the U.S. women’s spot in the gold medal race didn’t come drama-free. The Americans were granted a second chance run after Allyson Felix was bumped by another runner and dropped the baton in qualifying. On the men’s side, it will be the last time viewers can see American Justin Gatlin race against Usain Bolt.
  • Jamaica’s Bolt has said he will retire in 2017, and the men’s 4x100 m relay will be his final Olympic race. After winning gold three consecutive Olympics in the 100 m and 200 m, Bolt is eyeing his ninth gold medal.
  • Shelby Houlihan of Portland, Ore. and Abbey D’Agostino were the only two Americans to make it to the women’s 5,000 m final. Houlihan, a first-time Olympian, is a medal contender after finishing fourth in the 5,000 m heats. D’Agostino made headlines Tuesday when she helped fallen rival Nikki Hamblin to her feet during the heats.
