First former Husky rower wins medal at Paris Olympics

Nearly two dozen rowers who attended UW are competing in the Olympics this year.

SEATTLE — A former University of Washington rower won bronze at the Paris Olympics on Wednesday.

Tabea Schendekehl, 25, is one of several Huskies competing in the games and was the first UW alum to bring home a medal of the 2024 Summer Olympics.

Schendekehl, rowing for Germany, placed third in the women’s quadruple sculls at Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium with a time of 6:19.70. Great Britain won gold, and the Netherlands took home silver.

The U.S., which featured another former UW rower Teal Cohen, placed last in Final B.

Schendekehl graduated from UW in 2021. This was her first Olympic games.

The storied UW rowing program has sent Olympians to the last 13 Olympic Games and has brought home medals consecutively in the last five Olympics, according to the university. Nearly two dozen rowers who attended UW are competing in the Olympics this year.

The U.S. men’s eight boat, half of which is comprised of former UW rowers, advanced to the final, which is taking place Aug. 3.

Also for Team USA, Jessica Thoennes of UW will compete in the women’s pairs final on Aug. 2 after placing second in the Semifinal 2. Ben Davison is competing in the double sculls final Aug. 1, and Jacob Plihal will compete in Final C on Aug. 2.
