Washington athletes win silver, bronze in women's 100-meter at Paris Paralympics

Two athletes, from Spokane and Kent, are bringing home medals after their performances in the women's 100-meter T37 race on Thursday.

SEATTLE — Washington for the win!

Two Washington athletes nabbed medals at the Paris Paralympics in the women's 100-meter race on Thursday, Sept. 5.

Sprinter Taylor Swanson, of Spokane, placed second in the 100-meter T37 final with a time of 13.19. Jaleen Roberts, of Kent, placed third in the women’s 100-meter with a time of 13.29. Wen Xiaoyan of China won gold.

T37 is the classification for track and field athletes with coordinator and movement impairments.  

Roberts adds the bronze medal to her medal collection which includes a silver medal in the women's long jump.

Silver was Swanson’s first medal at the Paris Paralympics.

Swanson, 31, was born in South Korea and adopted when she was six months old. She attended Roosevelt High School in Seattle and went on to attend Arizona State University. Swanson was diagnosed with a phonological process disorder as a child and with cerebral palsy in 2023.

On Friday, Team USA’s Swanson, Hunter Woodhall, Noah Malone and Tatyana McFadden won bronze in the mixed 4x100-meter relay with a time of 47.32. Team USA finished behind Great Britain in second and China in first place.

Also on the track

Hannah Dederick, of Mead, placed fourth in the women’s 400-meter T54 final on Thursday, just shy of a medal. She placed sixth in the women’s 100-meter on Sept. 4 and placed seventh in the women’s 800-meter race on Sept. 1.

Lindi Marcusen, of Spokane, competes in the women’s 100-meter T63 race on Saturday, Sept. 7. She placed eighth in the women’s long jump on Sept. 4.
