PARIS, France — Washington athlete Susannah Scaroni is shining at the Paris Paralympics, racking up one silver medal and two bronze medals this week.
On Tuesday, 33-year-old Scaroni won bronze in the women's 1,500-meter T54 race. The race itself was solid until the final lap broke into chaos. A crash between Manuela Schär of Switzerland and Zhaoqian Zhou of China, who was the reigning gold champion at the Tokyo Games, kicked off the lap.
Scaroni was able to pull away and secure one of the three medal spots with a time of 3:16.68; Samantha Kinghorn of Great Britain took second and Catherine Debrunner of Switzerland won gold — and set a new Paralympic record with a time of 3:13.10.
Monday brought Scaroni's bronze medal in the women's 800-meter race after winning silver in the women's 5,000-meter race on Saturday.
From Tekoa, Scaroni is making her fourth Paralympics appearance in Paris after competing in 2012, 2016 and 2020. T54 is the classification for athletes with spinal cord injuries.
Her final event is the women's marathon on Saturday, Sept. 7.
