PARIS, France — Washington athletes will make a strong showing on the purple track at the Paris Olympics Games, beginning Friday, Aug. 2.
Some grew up in Washington while others moved to attend college at the University of Washington or Washington State University. A handful of athletes found success with Washington and its running teams, notably Seattle-based Brooks Beasts of Brooks Running.
Below is a list of track and field athletes with Washington ties to keep an eye out for during the Paris Olympics.
Wednesday, Aug. 7
Pole vault, women's:
Katie Moon, who trained in Pullman, is representing Team USA.
- Results: Moon got over 4.55m in the first round, and advanced to the next round. Moon will compete in the pole vault final on Wednesday at 9:15 a.m. Moon lasted till the end, but ultimately won the silver medal after getting over 4.85m. Australia's Nina Kennedy won the gold medal by topping 4.90m.
3,000-meter steeplechase, men's:
Kenneth Rooks of Walla Walla finished first at the U.S. Olympic Trials despite a fall.
- Results: Rooks finished second in his heat with an 8:24.95 and qualified for the next round. Rooks will run in the final on Wednesday at 12:43 p.m. Rooks ended up winning the silver medal, finishing second with a final time of 8:06.41.
400-meter hurdles, men's:
CJ Allen, who was born in Bremerton and competed collegiately at Washington State University (WSU), will compete for the U.S.
- Results: Allen finished second in his heat in Round 1 with a time of 48.64, advancing him to the next round. Allen will run in the semifinals on Wednesday at 10:35 a.m. Allen finished fourth in his semifinal heat and did not qualify for the final.
1,500-meters, women's:
Former Husky Sophie O'Sullivan will compete for Ireland.
- Results: O'Sullivan ran a 4:00:23, a personal best in Round 1 on Tuesday and will run in the repechage round Wednesday to try and earn a spot in the semifinal. Those repechage races will begin at 3:45 a.m. Wednesday. O'Sullivan ran a 4:03:73 and did not advance out of the repechage round.
100-meter hurdles, women's:
Charisma Taylor will run for the Bahamas and Maribel Caicedo for Ecuador. Both went to WSU.
- Results: Taylor ran a 12.78 and time-qualified for the semi-finals on Friday.
- Results: Caicedo ran a 13.05 and will run again in the repechage round on Thursday.
800-meters, men's:
Brandon Miller is a runner with Seattle's "Brooks Beasts."
- Results: Miller finished eighth in his heat early Wednesday morning with a time of 1:46:34. He will have another chance to run in the repechage round on Thursday morning.
5,000-meters, men's:
Brian Fay, a former Pacific-12 Conference champion at UW, will be with Team Ireland.
- Results: Fay ran a 13:55.35 and did not qualify for the final.
Friday, Aug. 9
4x400 relay, men's:
Jasneet Nijjar from WSU will be part of Canada's contingent
- Results: TBD
Earlier results
1,500-meter, men's:
University of Washington's (UW) Sam Tanner and Kieran Lumb will race for New Zealand and Team Canada, respectively. They both ran Friday, then raced again in the Aug. 3 repechage heats. Neither advanced to the semifinals.
- Results: Kieran Lumb ran a 3:38.11 in prelims. In Saturday's repechage, he ran a 3:35.76 and did not advance.
- Results: Sam Tanner ran a 3:39.87in prelims. In Saturday's, repechage, he ran a 3:40.71 and did not advance.
Josh Kerr, who trains with the "Brooks Beasts," is competing for Team Great Britain.
- Results: Josh Kerr earned a silver medal on Tuesday, running a 3:27.79. For the first time in 112 years, two American runners made the podium. Team USA's Cole Hocker, who attended the University of Oregon, won gold with a time of 3:27.65 and also secured a new Olympic Record time. American Yarid Nuguse won bronze with a time of 3:27.80, just .01 behind Kerr.
100-meter, men's
Louie Hinchliffe, who competed with Washington State University his freshman year, is on Team Great Britain.
- Results: Louie Hinchliffe stunned crowds on Aug. 3, beating sprint superstar Noah Lyles in a men's 100m heat. Hinchliffe ran a 9.98 and advances to Sunday's semifinal heats. Hinchcliffe ran a 9.97 in Sunday's semi-final and missed out on the final, which Lyles ended up winning.
3,000-meter steeplechase, women's:
Marisa Howard of Pasco will compete for Team USA.
- Results: Marisa Howard placed seventh in Sunday's Heat 3, finishing with a time of 9:24.78. Beatrice Chepkoech finished first in this race, finishing with a time of 9:13.56.
5,000-meter, women's:
Husky Izzi Batt-Doyle will race for Team Australia.
- Results: Batt-Doyle ran a 15:03.64 on Aug. 2, placing ninth in her heat. She did not advance to the finals.
400-meter hurdles, women's:
Gianna Woodruff, who attended the University of Washington, will run for Panama.
- Results: Gianna Woodruff finished in fifth place with a time of 54.94. USA's Jasmine Jones won gold in this heat with a time of 53.60.
800-meter, women's:
Nia Akins of Team USA is also a member of the "Brooks Beasts" team of the Seattle shoe company.
- Results: Akins finished in third place with a time of 1:58.20 in Heat 3 of the semifinal on Sunday. Great Britain's Keely Hodgkinson finished first with a time of 1:58.86. Akins cruised to a 1:59.67 on Aug. 2.
