MOUNTLAKE TERRACE, Wash. — Visitors to the Mountlake Terrace Off-Leash Dog Park will notice a sign that reads: "Adopt a Park - Pooper Trooper."
It's one of two initial parks where the local business plans to keep free dog waste bags restocked and grounds free of fecal matter - and they're encouraging others to do their part, too.
"Recognizing the significant amount of waste that's being left behind, especially in parks and trails, we decided to start this program where we install a station and provide bags for pickup," Nicki Walters said. "We come every week and refill the station and empty the receptacle so everyone in the community has the means to pick up their dog waste."
They're taking suggestions by email for other locations that they could adopt, and encourage everyone to get involved in taking care of their own community parks.
The Washington State Department of Ecology says bacteria from pet waste is a major contributor to pollution in Washington waterways. Even if it's left on solid ground, rain can carry it into drains and ditches that feed lakes, rivers and Puget Sound. Bacteria can make water unsafe to swim in, causing beach closures; propel the growth of harmful algae; or infect shellfish that people eat.
There is a simple solution for every dog owner: pick up waste. And don't just leave the bag there, either. It needs to make it all the way to the trash can. Here's why.
Walters hopes everyone doing their part can make an impact- and that more pickup stations will make it even easier.
"Your dog may go more than once, and you prepared for one," Walters said. "You get busy and you forget and you realize you don't have any bags- and voila, there's a station where you can pick it up."
Many cities and counties in western Washington also allow small businesses and other organizations to adopt a park; check with your local municipality to find out how.
