Southern Resident orcas spotted swimming in Puget Sound near Kingston

Southern Resident members of J-Pod were spotted in Puget Sound Tuesday afternoon.

WHIDBEY ISLAND STATION, Wash. — Southern Resident orcas were spotted Tuesday afternoon swimming in Puget Sound near Kingston.

The orcas are members of J-Pod, according to the Orca Behavior Institute

The Southern Residents even gave visitors to the Bush Point Lighthouse on Whidbey Island a show earlier in the day.

KING 5 viewer David Haeckel sent in video of the whales seen swimming off the shore near the lighthouse.

The Southern Residents could be seen swimming with some calves in tow, including one that is believed to be J56, who was seen over the weekend in "poor condition," according to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife

Members of the Institute said J56 appears to be doing better and she is actively foraging with her mother, but it doesn't mean she's out of the woods and her condition will continue to be monitored.
