RENTON, Wash. — Interstate 405 Northbound near Renton has reopened after a hit-and-run truck crash caused a large fire early Tuesday morning.
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) said all northbound lanes were blocked at SR 900/NE Park Drive around 6:20 a.m. Multiple lanes were blocked for hours on Tuesday while crews cleaned up the scene.
WSDOT said the roadway reopened at 3:30 p.m.
The driver of the semi-truck was able to walk away and escape injury despite the truck bursting into flames. WSP Trooper Rick Johnson shared an update just before 7:30 a.m. that the fire was out.
The truck was carrying bags of cement, which complicated the clean-up process for officials.
The suspect vehicle in the hit-and-run is an older green Honda Civic, Johnson said.
WSDOT said a 4-mile backup quickly accumulated.
The HOV lane of southbound I-405 was blocked for over an hour before eventually reopening.
The northbound HOV lane was eventually reopened. As of 11:20 a.m. Tuesday, some traffic was getting by in the HOV lane northbound, but the other two lanes remained closed and WSDOT said there was still a miles-long backup.
Just before 1 p.m. PT, WSDOT said a second lane had opened but one remained closed while the roadway was cleared.
