Debris thrown at vehicles on I-90 in Seattle for the second time recently

On Tuesday morning, two vehicles were hit by debris thrown onto the westbound lanes of Interstate 90, east of the Mount Baker Tunnel.

SEATTLE — Chris Burnet said he’s lucky that whatever hit his car didn’t shatter the windshield and feels he’s lucky he was able to safely pull over.

“It definitely wasn’t something that had fallen off the vehicle in front of me,” Burnet said.

On Tuesday morning, two vehicles were hit by debris thrown onto the westbound lanes of Interstate 90, east of the Mount Baker Tunnel, according to Washington State Patrol.

“After flinching, I looked up out of the corner of my eye and could see there was a person there. He had kind of turned around. I didn’t get to see his face, but he clearly had thrown something at me,” Burnet continued.

It's the second incident in the same general area of I-90 recently. Troy Taylor of North Bend told KING 5 last week that someone threw something that hit the front of his truck where I-90 and Interstate 5 meet.

To date this year, WSP reports there have been 60 incidents of debris being thrown at vehicles. There were 204 incident during all of last year and 388 incidents in 2021.

Washington Trooper Rick Johnson said they don't believe it's just one person throwing debris onto I-90.

“It's very dangerous and we’re well aware of it with the descriptions we have and the troopers that work that area are on the constant look out for individuals,” Johnson said.

It's a reminder for drivers to stay vigilant as investigators work to find out who’s throwing what, and why. If you have any information you’re asked to contact the Washington State Patrol.
