TACOMA, Wash. — All lanes of I-5 northbound near South 38th Street in Tacoma have reopened after an hours-long closure Friday due to a deadly multi-vehicle crash.
Washington State Patrol (WSP) Trooper Robert Reyer said the crash involved two semi-trucks and five cars. The crash was first reported around 7:45 a.m. Friday.
At 10:44 a.m., Reyer said it would be several hours before all northbound lanes could reopen.
Around 8:15 a.m., Reyer tweeted that one person involved in the crash was pronounced dead at the scene.
I-5 north reopened just before 3:30 p.m. on Friday,
Reyer also tweeted the driver of one of the semi-trucks involved was arrested for suspected DUI.
The Tacoma Fire Department said seven people were injured in the crash, including the person that died. According to Tacoma Fire, one person was in critical condition, two people were in serious condition, one person was taken to the hospital as a precaution and two others were treated at the scene and released.
It is currently unknown if those injured in the crash were adults or children.
Reyer called the incident a “very, very tragic and serious collision.”
“The magnitude of this collision is definitely extremely high,” said Reyer. “I can’t remember seeing something like this very often.”
The crash investigation is ongoing.
