145th Street closure in Shoreline extended to 2025

There is no timetable for reopening the one-block stretch of 145th Street.

SHORELINE, Wash. — A portion of North 145th Street in Shoreline will remain closed through early 2025 as construction takes longer than expected.

The one-block stretch of 145th Street between First Avenue Northeast and Fourth Avenue Northeast has been closed since April as crews work to widen the roadway as part of a traffic improvement project. The roadway, which provides direct access to Interstate 5, was expected to reopen in November.

The city of Shoreline said Friday that the length of the extended closure has not been determined.

The complexity of the work and “unforeseen delays” has extended the closure, according to the city. There have been underground utility conflicts, and unforeseen existing conditions were discovered as crews worked to relocate utilities. The relocation work had to happen before crews construct roundabouts at the freeway on- and off-ramps.

“This is a complex project involving multiple agencies that must all work together,” the city said in a statement. “If one part is delayed, it can have a cascading effect on the rest of the project timeline.”

The multi-month closure has prompted a traffic headache for neighbors near the construction site as detoured vehicles travel around the construction zone. When the closure first began in April, some drivers reported it taking an additional 10 to 15 minutes to get around it.

“While we know the extended closure and ongoing construction is inconvenient in the short term, the long-term benefits of the 145th Street Corridor Project are significant,” the city said in a statement.

In addition to roundabouts, the project will feature updated lanes and pedestrian crossings, along with bike lanes. The goal is to improve traffic mobility and safety along the corridor.
