MERCER ISLAND, Wash. — Multiple lane and ramp closures are scheduled on Interstate 90 between Mercer Island and Seattle this weekend, including all eastbound lanes and some westbound lanes, for separate construction projects.

Eastbound I-90 will be fully closed between Mercer Island and Seattle from 11 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Sunday. According to WSDOT, crews will restripe the lanes around a failing expansion joint on the East Channel Bridge.

Northbound and southbound Interstate 5 off-ramps to I-90 will also be closed over the weekend, as well as the on-ramps to eastbound I-90 at Rainier Avenue, 80th Avenue SE (HOV only), and Island Crest Way.

The closure is happening so crews can restripe eastbound I-90 back to four lanes around a failing expansion near Mercer Island. The expansion joint will be replaced at a later date, mostly likely during the 2025 construction season, WSDOT says.

Westbound I-90 will be reduced to two lanes starting Friday at 10 p.m., and they will reopen Saturday at 6 a.m., according to the Washington State Department of Transportation. The 76th Avenue Southeast and West Mercer Way on-ramps will also be closed during this time.

WSDOT crews will be working on scheduled maintenance of the Mount Baker Tunnel and Mercer Island Lid, which includes drainage, fire detection camera cleaning and roadway hydrant repairs.

WSDOT urges drivers to plan their weekend travel in advance and expect delays in the area.
