Wrong-way driver in custody for DUI after fiery crash on I-5 near JBLM

The crash occurred around 3:10 p.m. on Tuesday. All northbound lanes were blocked for more than two hours.

JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. — Northbound traffic on Interstate 5 was moving again Tuesday evening after a crash and car fire at milepost 120 near Joint Base Lewis-McChord caused major backups.

The crash occurred around 3:10 p.m., blocking all north and southbound lanes.

According to preliminary information from Washington State Patrol (WSP), the crash involved a wrong-way driver and a semi-truck.

The wrong-way driver, a 53-year-old Bremerton man, is in custody for DUI, according to WSP.

Traffic was backed up about 6 miles in both directions by 4:30 p.m.

All southbound lanes were closed for about an hour. Three southbound were open shortly after 4:30 p.m. All southbound lanes were open just before 5 p.m.

Northbound traffic was moving again - with one lane open - by approximately 5:40 p.m. as crews continued to clear the scene. Two lanes were open by approximately 7:40 p.m. The road was fully opened by 10 p.m.

The wrong-way driver sustained minor injuries, according to WSP.
