Backups stretching 10 miles from accident on I-5 northbound near Kent

Visibility is down to a half mile or less in some areas where a Freezing Fog Advisory is in effect.

KENT, Wash. — A crash has caused major backups near Kent and state Route 516 Tuesday morning.

The crash was blocking the two left lanes of the interstate for hours but has since cleared to the side of the roadway. However, delays are still significant.

Backups stemming from the crash are stretching back ten miles, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT). Drivers are asked to avoid the area if they can.

At around 7:15 Tuesday morning travel times from Milton to Seattle were at 141 minutes, with a 139-minute travel time to Bellevue and a 107-minute travel time to the I-405/SR 518 interchange.

The crash was between a box truck and a pickup truck.

Dense, freezing fog has limited visibility on Tuesday morning. Visibility is down to half a mile or less in some areas.

A Freezing Fog Advisory is in effect until 10 a.m. for Seattle, Tacoma, Bremerton, Silverdale, Olympia, Lacey, Shelton, Tumwater and Bellingham.

Those who must drive in dense fog are asked to use their headlights and leave plenty of distance between themselves and other drivers. The National Weather Service also recommends people stay alert for frost on bridge decks, which may contribute to slippery road conditions.
