SEATTLE — A driver was arrested for suspected DUI and vehicular homicide after hitting and killing a pedestrian on Interstate 5 in Seattle late Sunday night, the Washington State Patrol (WSP) said.
WSP said two vehicles were traveling northbound in the I-5 express lanes around 9 p.m. Sunday night, when a 20-year-old man stepped out into the roadway in front of one of them.
The first vehicle swerved and braked to avoid the pedestrian, but the vehicle behind it struck both the pedestrian and the vehicle in front when it attempted to swerve, WSP said in a press memo.
The victim, a 20-year-old man from Othello, was taken to Harborview Medical Center but was eventually declared dead. The driver, a 30-year-old man from Renton, was taken into custody for suspected DUI and vehicular homicide, WSP said. The other driver, a 20-year-old woman from Oklahoma, was not injured in the collision.
The roadway was blocked for almost four hours while authorities cleared the scene, WSP says.
