I-5 south reopens in Ferndale following fatal crash

A fatal collision blocked all lanes of I-5 in Ferndale for several hours Tuesday night.

FERNDALE, Wash. — Interstate 5 going southbound reopened in Ferndale after it was closed for several hours due to a fatal crash.

A fatal crash blocked all lanes of southbound I-5 in Ferndale beginning at around 4:15 p.m. Tuesday night, according to Washington State Patrol Trooper Jacob Kennett.

One car on southbound I-5 spun out, hitting two other vehicles, according to WSP. The man who died has not been identified. He was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

I-5 southbound was closed at Portal Way at milepost 263, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT).

Emergency responders were also on the northbound shoulder of the interstate responding to the incident. Drivers headed both directions were asked to expect significant delays and take alternate routes if possible.

Freezing rain was reported across Whatcom County, leading to slick roads, according to WSDOT North.

People are asked to slow down on the roads, drive appropriately for slick conditions and stay in if possible, WSP said.

I-5 northbound was also blocked in Everett for a few hours Tuesday night.
